Since I always enjoy the Philippines so much we decided to do something in return. There are still a lot of children who don’t finish their high school. Sometimes the parents can’t afford it, sometimes they need to work to help provide for the family.
Lolo and Lola (grandpa and grandma) were teachers and scholars who always supported a lot of students in their studies and careers. We decided in their remembrance to continue their work in our own way.
So we set up a scholarship for students in Bacacay Albay Bicol whose parents don’t have the means to finance their studies. Each year 20 students will receive the scholarship. If they maintain their good grades and attitude they will get the scholarship until they finish their studies.
In order to obtain it, apart from fitting the criteria (deprived financial background, being ambitious and having good conduct and good grades), we asked the students to write an essay entitled ‘Who am I?’.
We received 50 essays. Beautiful stories, some funny and clever written but some also tell a tale of misfortune and sadness. There’s a story of a kid who loves to become an astronaut but also one of a girl who made a promise to herself not to get married as early in life as her mom, since she wants to build a stable future before starting a family.
50 essays, 50 stories. We’re in the though process of selecting 20 students.
