For my ‘After-Hour Shopping Mall’ series I have to visit a lot of shopping malls around closing time. Again I’m beginning to be an expert on what products to get where. I feel like one of those secret shoppers who are hired by brands to check out the competitions products.
On my wandering nights in the malls I meet a lot of people in uniforms. The girl with the red wig was a promotor for ‘Alice in Wonderland’, something to do with the movie I guess.

So I’m back at ‘The Jing’ again. Today I ended up in this huge fight with 8 women who didn’t want me to take pictures of bystanders. It seems the subject I’m interested in is very sensitive and being a foreigner makes it even harder to get the shots that I need. (I’ll later write a piece on my blog about what I’m working on).
There was a lot of shouting. To my Dutch ears Chinese can seem loud even when people are having a normal conversation so imagine 7 women at once shouting at me and my two friends.
They literally kicked me out of the place with their shouting. I was very impressed and secretly recorded the whole scene so later I can ask my interpreter what exactly was said.
For the second series I had to do some research into blankets and textiles. Been going to a lot of markets and meeting up with (fashion)designers. From market stalls to luxurious wedding dresses (RuYi couture).

Mister Motley a nice Dutch art magazine just posted some pics from the Beijing Fashionistas series.
